Some of the most popular entertainment offerings on the small screen today are renovation shows. And why not. We all love to see the results – and the drama’s that always appear to occur during the renno.
For someone in the business of supplying tradies to help with almost every aspect of home renovation and repair work, I can tell you that television doesn’t always tell the truth.
Putting up a deck in one easy day with a few mates? Not quite. There is nothing wrong with tackling DIY work but just do some research and be realistic about your capabilities.
There are some jobs that are immediately out. Including ALL electrical work, plumbing and gas-fitting. These must be left to the professionals. We’re not just saying that to drum up business – it’s the law.
HERE’S WHERE THINGS GO PEAR SHAPE
There are many other jobs around the home keen renovators can take on but, again, be careful. Painting might seem easy – but when done badly, it certainly shows and does nothing to improve the value of your important asset.
Polishing floorboards is another job people often try to tackle. Sure, you can hire those cumbersome machines from your local hardware store but if you don’t know how to operate it properly, you’re at risk of ruining the floor – and that is an expensive fix.
Tiling is another area where home-owners often try to save money and good luck to you if you attempt it because, to be done properly, precision is everything. I’ve seen my fair share of dodgy tiling – it looks shoddy and can actually lead to expensive bathroom repairs when water damage occurs because of poor grouting and unsealed wet areas.
If you want to get your hands dirty around the house, try starting small. Need a screw tightened, a cupboard door to stop sticking, a plant that needs pruning? Maybe you want to attach a new letterbox to the front fence? Do your research.
With YouTube and webinars, there are many online tutorials on just about everything. They can be really informative and definitely worth a look. As you mark off the few little odd jobs, you’ll feel a great sense of pride and perhaps have the confidence to learn about something more challenging.
Just don’t go thinking you can build that outdoor deck or put up the front fence in one day…yet. Your time may come but it’s wise to start small or call us on 1300 79 HIRE (4473).
